Sixteen-year-old Arien has spent his life in the quiet town of Valenstone, dreaming of something beyond its familiar streets and the towering Fellmark Mountains.

To his father, a good life is one built with honest work and steady hands. But to Arien, the greatest honour belongs to the Wardens: the red-cloaked Knights sworn to protect the people of the kingdom.

Under the guidance of a local blacksmith with a mysterious past, Arien begins learning the skills of a swordsman, unaware that trouble is already gathering beyond the mountains.

When a devastating Raider attack strikes Valenstone, everything changes. Amid the bloodshed, Arien unleashes a strange and terrifying power he cannot explain. And when someone close to him disappears, the clues left behind suggest that the violence may be part of something far more deliberate.

With his home forever changed, Arien finds himself travelling alongside the very Knights he once admired, bound for the distant Citadel and the beginning of a life he has always wanted.

But the roads are dangerous, loyalties are uncertain, and those seeking to bury the truth have not finished their work.

As Arien takes his first steps towards becoming a Warden, he must confront a reality far removed from the stories he grew up believing.

For wearing the red is not a promise of glory. It is a promise to stand when others cannot.

And every Knight must begin somewhere.
